Remember the goals you set at the beginning of the year? What feedback did you get? The plan for where you want to be in 2 years?
How is it going? Making much progress?
The truth is, most of us don't get very far in our goals. We have the best intentions. We want to learn new skills, change behaviors, or do good things.
So what gets in the way?
One answer is that any change seems too complicated. Too much information, too many distractions that take us out of focus, consume our energy, pulverize our efforts and change our priorities.
Here are 5 tips that can help you use your time and energy wisely to improve your results and turn your intentions into reality.
1. BE FOCUSED. Yes, you'll have a huge list of things you can do, should do, or want to do - but you can only change one thing at a time. Choose one.
Focus on a change that energizes you.
Focus on a change that creates positive results.
Focus on a change that is at the right level of difficulty - not so easy that you don't feel challenged, nor so difficult that you can't make the change.
2. CHOOSE "WHAT". This is also called goal setting. Do you need to change the way you act? Improve a skill? Make things happen?
Pick just a few important goals, and then: Escreva-os.
post them.
Say them out loud!
3. DISCOVER “HOW”. You need a plan. You will not change for an illusion or a vague to-do list. Can you spend as much time planning how to achieve your goals as when you plan your vacation?
Your change plan should be built around four items:
Tactics. What will you do? When will you do this?
Resources. What are you going to invest? What is available to you? What will you need from others?
Tracking. How are you going to check how you're doing? When are you going to check?
Celebration. How will you reward yourself when you achieve goals and objectives? Who will you celebrate with?
4. CONSIDER POTENTIAL ISSUES. Things can go wrong. You will encounter obstacles. Anticipate obstacles, adapt, find a plan B, don't freak out or give up. Be aware of the main causes of problems:
Time
other people
Fear
5. CHANGE NOW! Take a step. Take another. Put your plan into action, monitor your progress, and make necessary adjustments along the way. Remember of:
Keep your eyes on the finish line.
Pay attention to its impact.
Recognize any errors.
Adapt and adjust.
ARE YOU READY? I THINK YOU ARE... SAY YOU ARE.
You already have ideas, dreams and glimpses of what's next - personally and professionally. Then...
Do the test:
If you've been waiting for a better time to start – you're not ready, unfortunately!
If you're hoping to have more time - it's not going to happen.
If you don't know what you need to learn - choose something.
Only action and effort will bring ideas, insights, rewards and results, start acting.
